Back in October students were stranded for close to two hours in the Mobile Bay. We had to wait for rescue crews to come get us. There have been countless other rescues by the Sheriff s Flotilla including one just this morning. And no one can forget the Tragedy on a Bridge . Volunteers spent weeks searching for the children.but the resources were limited. Divers reported only inches visibility. A faster high tech tool had to be brought down from Virginia. You can do the area of a football field in a about a minute and see everything that s on the bottom. Now the Sheriff s Office is getting their own side scan sonar through a grant appropriated by the county commission. The rest of the money will go towards new diving gear and boating equipment. This is a major step in building a high tech flo! tilla search and rescue operation. Lt. Commander William Frost told us we re just so happy to be able to use and have this equipment available to us it s just great. The community s generosity is playing a huge role. After the Tragedy on a Bridge was donated to the Flotilla fund in just a few days. That money bought a new airboat. The community was just outstanding. When the students were stranded in October the Mobile County Sheriff s Office could have used a better airboat. The airboat will run in little to no water. It will get into places no other equipment will. Now they have one. If you would like to help out you can make donations to the Flotilla Fund.
