USA looks to adjust against Greece USA Today

When Greece knocked off the U.S. men s basketball team in the world championship semifinals they ran the pick and roll times. When the two teams meet today expect more of the same. The challenge for the USA however is doing a better job defending it. We have to communicate make guys aware of where the pick is coming from guard Jason Kidd says. If our game plan is not working we need to make adjustments on the fly. SCHEDULE Road to basketball gold GOING FOR GOLD BLOG Latest from the Games PHOTO GALLERY Olympic moments Two years ago the USA ran out of time before they figured out how to stop Greece a team without any current NBA players. The USA also lost to Greece at the Games. This week Greece followed its opening game loss to Spain with a point win against Germany. We ve been waiting for this game the last two years Carmelo Anthony says. We let that game slip out of our hands and they know that they know they stole a game from us. Shooting woes One area of concern for the U! SA has been its spotty outside shooting which also plagued the squad. Most notably Kobe Bryant has gone for from three point range. Bryant s game isn t normally catch and shoot he s more accustomed to creating off the dribble. He better get used to it Anthony says smiling. Surrounded by such talent the game is a little easier Kidd says. He s got wide open looks instead of two guys jumping at him. If we have to send two of our guys jumping at him then that s what we have to do. La Pistola Ask assistant coach Mike D Antoni the New York Knicks coach and international basketball guru about Spain s year old sensation and without missing a beat he says La Pistola Pedro Meet the Spanish Pistol Pete Ricky Rubio expected to become a familiar name in the USA in the near future and a possible top five pick in next year s NBA draft. He s going to be a very good player in the NBA his defense is very good and Pistol Pete Maravich was not known for that D Antoni says of the point guard. R! ubio has a CD of Maravich highlights so he s familiar with the legend. It s one s dream to go to the NBA Rubio said after Spain s overtime win Tuesday against China. He admires Chris Paul and Jason Kidd but as for the player he most resembles he says I play like me. During crucial stretches against China Spain relied on Rubio s pesky defense in a pressure situation most teenagers couldn t handle. They know that s the future D Antoni says. The USA s NBA stars will get a peek at that future when they play Spain the reigning world champions on Saturday.
