I hate losing. I hate not being the best at something. I hate tapping even in training. So shoot me That s been giving me some headaches recently because a lot of my training partners are damn good. Even leaving aside the ones with a sizeable weight advantage a lot of the time I find myself struggling. Maybe I m the only person to feel like this and you re all wondering what I m talking about but I suspect not. I know there are some enlightened folk who seem serenely unbothered by about such ultimately unimportant things as making a mistake and getting choked in sparring and I salute them. At the same time I don t think competitiveness is necessarily a bad thing. As with certain other things in life it s what you do with it that counts . A trap I see a lot of people fall into is th! e big fish in a small pond syndrome . I may even be guilty of it myself now and then until I catch myself doing it. It s nice to be the biggest fish around and an easy way of doing this is to shrink the size of your pond. The easiest way to do this is to surround yourself by people you know you can beat. If I m being given a hard time by one of my training partners I could massage my ego by torturing a few white belts. I can decide to only ever play my A game and stay away from areas I m less good at. To ensure that the other fish in the pond don t get too big I might try to keep all my secrets to myself. I could keep things back from someone I m coaching. little tricks that might give me an edge. Then with a bit of smoke and a few mirrors I can convince myself that I m even bigger than I am and that my little neighbourhood of pondweed is representative of the whole world. The thing about big fish in small ponds though is that they tend to get eaten pretty quickly if someon! e takes them and drops them in a larger pond where there s some real competition. The only way to get really good is to surround yourself by other big fish. That element of healthy competition drives a competitor to develop and improve in a way that being able to casually annihilate everyone s he trains with never would. Homo Sapiens evolved in a hostile environment amongst a bunch of other species who wanted to eat us and may have seemed to have all the obvious advantages. size speed strength and really big teeth. It s not all about competition though. it s about collaboration too. What you want is a whole group of big fish together in the same place all sharing their ideas and growing together. The bigger the other fish get the more I can learn from them. While it might be hard work keeping up and tough on the ol ego at times it s also the perfect environment for getting seriously good. Deb Price The Detroit News WASHINGTON U.S. Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan said Sunday that a mail in caucus in which Michigan Democrats vote again needs to be considered to settle a party dispute so that the! state s delegates are seated at the national convention in August. The one possibility would be some kind of mail in caucus Levin said on ABC s This Week hosted by George Stephanopoulos. That s being explored added Levin who did not endorse the idea outright. Key Michigan players trying to resolve the dispute with the national Democratic Party talked with experts in mail in voting over the weekend according to a knowledgeable source. Advertisement But red flags were quickly raised by skeptics in Michigan who questioned whether it would favor Hillary Rodham Clinton and be possible to pull off. Florida appears to be moving toward a mail in vote with advocates such as Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson a Clinton supporter. Both Barack Obama and Hillary have much invested to get this thing right Nelson said on Face the Nation. Because if Michigan and Florida are not seated it is going to be monumentally consequential he added in an apparent reference to the possibility of the Democrats losing the White House in the fallout. Democratic National Committee! Chairman Howard Dean noted the stakes as well in an appearance on Face the Nation. When these states come before us with a proposal we are going to go to both campaigns and work with them he said. They are going to have to accept these because we need all of their followers. We can t have half the Democratic Party walk out thinking there was some deal cooked and that s why their person didn t win. Dean went out of his way to praise mail in voting calling it a very good process. Cost of redos an issue The party dispute was on full display on the top Sunday talk shows. Gov. Edward Rendell D Pa. said on Meet the Press that he and Gov. Jon Corzine D N.J. are willing to work to raise million to help pay the cost of redos in Florida and Michigan. And given all the money that the Obama campaign and the Clinton campaign are spending they can dig in and their supporters can dig in to their pockets and help the states of Michigan and Florida have a revote Rendell said. Levin who is ! neutral in the race estimated that a mail in caucus would cost a couple million dollars. On Friday he all but rejected the idea being floated then of an on site firehouse primary. He said it would be too costly about million and impractical. But Michigan state Sen. Tupac Hunter D Detroit co chairman of the Barack Obama campaign in the state objected to mail in voting. I think she s Clinton fishing for delegates said Hunter who wants Michigan s disputed delegates to be divided equally between Obama and Clinton. Why this sudden push for a new vote for Michigan and Florida It plays to the favor of Hillary Clinton. I find it suspect. The epic dispute followed decisions by Michigan and Florida to break party rules and hold early primaries in January. Clinton won both contests but Obama s name wasn t on the Michigan ballot and neither candidate campaigned in the state. Michigan and Florida delegates won t be seated unless a deal is reached either soon by the states and the candidates or later by the convention s credentials committee. Delay sour fee! lings and the appearance of disarray could ultimately hurt Democrats chances of winning against Republican Sen. John McCain in November. Hunter predicted if the mail in option became the consensus Obama wouldn t stand in the way and that he would do very well in Michigan. Clinton s campaign said Friday she is open to a rematch. Michigan state Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer said Levin s estimate for a mail in vote is way too low. Michigan has never done a full blown mail in before Brewer said. Michigan offered mail in voting in and . About percent of votes in came in by mail he said. Now you would be talking about millions of votes by mail not thousands Brewer said of what he called a logistical nightmare. Such a possibility would be easier in Florida he said because voters register as Democrats or Republicans. But Michigan doesn t have such party ID. Brewer said the questions raised are Would people apply for mail in ballots as done in the past or would all million r! egistered voters be sent ballots How would you screen out voters who cast ballots in the Republican primary on Jan. On short notice how could you ensure people who move get their ballots Or that poor people either without addresses or money for a stamp are able to vote States study their options Dean put responsibility to solve the issue with Michigan and Florida but he talked at length about mail in elections. He noted that Oregon does its elections by mail in vote. And he noted redos aren t unprecedented Delaware found itself in a similar bind in and needed to redo its election Dean pointed out. Dean said it will be a while before the dispute is settled adding that the earliest a deal could be reached would likely be after the primary in Pennsylvania on April . On Fox News Sunday Democratic National Committee member Debbie Dingell of Michigan said unnamed outsiders have offered to help raise the money for a redo in Michigan. We ve heard offers from people outside of the state. And we would welcome those people showing us how we could raise m! oney for some alternative. The resources are not there inside the state. So people who have offered to help raise the money we welcome hearing from them to help us finance whatever option she said. Florida s Nelson said the state Democratic Party could raise million needed for a mail in. The DNC won t pay for either state to do a mulligan primary. And leading Michigan Democrats all say taxpayers won t be asked to pay for a second round of voting. Levin said for a mail in to work it would need to be practical fair affordable. He acknowledged some real problems with a mail in vote. Not just cost but the security issue. You do it ahead of time so it can get overseas and then the apparatus of the state government counts the votes. They confirm the signatures just like an absentee ballot on the envelope. A Political Neophytes Rant on the State of the Democratic Party

Attention all Spendocrats listen up It is time to dismount from your donkeys and offer up some good ole fashion practicality for once. Before I go on ranting from my virtual pedestal I ll be the first to admit I don t know squat about this whole political game. There is way too much filth I to wade through in a vain attempt to figure it all out. The one commitment I made from the onset of this exercise in futility was to never become a party lackey who simply tows the party line. I am too arrogant and I need to think for myself and I was never one for labels anyway. Besides does it really make much sense to have all of your decisions made before you even pretend to have a clue Hell I d rather talk out my ass than have some suit do it for me. That said in my lifetime I have been routinely underwhelmed by what the political progeny of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison has brought to the table. Your party has been lackluster in both candidates and ideology with Bill Clinton be! ing the one notable exception caution I am warming quickly to the Elitist Barack Obama . Fundamentally my biggest issue rests with the token Democrat fix all solution of raising taxes assuming throwing money at all our problems serves as the world s greatest Band Aid. Believe me I understand and sympathize with the many social needs that plague our fellow citizens. Our health care system is a mess social security needs to be addressed and eliminated a deserved welfare program is essential to the survival of our less fortunate and the rising costs of education always is a concern. Not to mention our entire energy and transportation infrastructure needs a massive overhaul that would write off our reliance on coal burning fossil fuels into posterity. Sadly your wondrous strategy of its cold in here so let s throw more money onto the fire just doesn t suffice. The hard earned money of my fellow tax payers is not worth your poor spending track record. Sure Republicans are no bet! ter with their cash handling skills but at least they generally take less of it away from us. All this government consistently reaffirms to its people is its uncanny ability to spend more money than is collected via the income tax. How is it that every successful company in this great country manages to perform a biblical miracle by walking on water and operating in the black As a government it is time you start treating citizens of this country in the manner they ought to be treated as shareholders of these United States. We vote and let s not forget pay you to work for us act in our best interest and ultimately run this country as though you have some semblance of legitimate mental capacity. Sorry but the ability to finger paint is not the maximum requirement for bestowing us with the honor of your dedicated public service. So my personal challenge is simple why don t you demonstrate real worth and prove to me and my fellow shareholders why we should vote for you and willingly invest more of our hard earned money into your social programs Ma! ny of my fellow citizens want to assist our brothers in country to establish a stronger more perfect Union. If only the members of our government could simply demonstrate competence which includes a lack of corruption many of our problems would be solved. How is it that career politicians are allowed to stay in office do next to zero work sleeping with interns doesn t count raise taxes offer no bid contracts to their brother in law s company and collect pensions when they decide to finally hang it up after years of sweat and toil in office That s right I am talking to you Mr. Lifetime Democratic New Jersey Senator Guy. But I mean seriously it s okay we can just raise taxes the price of tolls for the next one hundred years and costs per click of your Internet time while we re at it with a double tax when you re looking at porn. But where the Democratic Party is most seriously lacking is leadership. Gone are the days of charismatic leaders like Jefferson Jackson Roosevelt and! Kennedy. Many of our greatest Presidents are your democratic kin and what are you doing to honor that legacy Nothing. Merely resting on laurels that have long dried up. The only platform you can muster is to habitually disagree with your fated political adversary the Republicans. Really how tough is it to simply take the opposite stance on every issue It is a tiresome and transparent ploy. Those are skills we all developed back in pre school when we were busy flinging snot on the bathroom walls. Has it really resorted to I know you are but what am I Warning Incoming Anecdote Renowned democratic President Andrew Jackson was famously told his party was made up of a bunch of jackass . You know what he did embraced it and turned it into the donkey symbol that would serve as the rallying cry of the once strong Democratic Party. General Jackson was a crazy S.O.B that could clearly care less if you called him names this was a guy who killed people . He was just going to throw it right back in your face because he was tougher and crazier then you any! way. Jackson played the part of war hero better than anyone telling the Supreme Court to go shove it when John Marshall ruled against Jackson s presidential injunction. Retorting the Chief Justice s decision to side with the Native Americans making it illegal to remove the Cherokee Nation from their ancestral home in Georgia Jackson cantankerously replied John Marshall has made his decision now let him enforce it Of course this led to the infamous Trail of Tears. As a man of principle he would not allow himself his people or his party to be stepped on. He walked softly and he carried a big stick long before the Rough Rider ever did. This is precisely the leadership Democrats and the rest of this country sorely needs. Someone who is going to kick us all in the rear calling us all out for the jackass we ve become. It is a sad irony Democrats you have regressed into a limp noodle party that does not have a clue and as yet does not deserve the hard earned money of my fellow tax! payers. I implore you wisen up and earn our votes. This nation needs both sides of the political spectrum to come forward with standout candidates in order to drive our return to greatness. Until then there is a quote I heard a while back that sums up the present state of the two party system quite nicely The Republicans are the Party with bad ideas while the Democrats are the Party with no ideas. And don t laugh too hard Republicans you too are far from perfect and John McCain will lose the Presidential Election whether it is Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. And I hope to God it is Obama. When applied to me I don t know. So on my excursion I am going to learn about myself and ! Second thoughts Aikman others wonder if Favre is really gone for good By CHRIS JENKINS AP Sports Writer GREEN BAY Wis. AP Troy Aikman says it s a sure thing Brett Favre will have second thoughts about hanging up his helmet. The Hall of Fame quarterback knows how hard it is to walk away from the NFL and never look back. Even after a series of concussions led Aikman to retire from the Dallas Cowboys after the season he was tempted to come back two years later. I was ready to go and had talked with my wife and everything about it Aikman told The Associated Press by phone. Aikman figures Favre will feel the same pull the closer the season gets. American Idol Yes Again

I missed American Idol last night. again I m gonna try to catch it tonight. I just always seem to be preoccupied or busy when it comes on lately. It s annoying cause I m actually one of those people who wait for the new season to start. lol. I wish Fox hosted American Idol episodes on their website like ABC does with their popular shows. I like to watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition and Grey s Anatomy. but I usually don t get to catch them on their regular viewing time. So I simply go to ABC.Com and watch the episodes I missed at my leisure. usually really late at night when I have some quiet time and the kiddo is in bed lol. Speaking of the kiddo. he s been really into the way he looks lately. Only wanting to wear specific clothes and putting hair gel in his hair.
